Europe’s largest shopping mall, at the time of construction, the Trafford Centre was a project like no other. Although the whole project was completed in an incredibly short timescale, the quality of the design and the finishes employed are truly outstanding. 12 years on, the project remains an awesome sight, the scale of which is unlikely to be repeated in the U.K.
Designed by Theo Kondos Associates in New York, the scheme utilises over 20,000 metres of cold cathode lighting. Recessed coffers in the malls are beautifully illuminated with continuous runs of shadow-free cove lighting, whilst the domes, feature details and large sweeping arches, set within high-level glass roofs, are highlighted with surface mounted high voltage cold cathode. Over 12,000 metres of ACDC Nemesis Covelite Twin was used within the recessed coffers and ACDC worked closely with consultants WSP to develop several difficult details throughout the scheme. The project was completed within a tight 12 month timescale, which included the development of specialist lamp machines and significant investment in machinery and plant, on a project which finally launched the company's identity as one of the world's largest manufacturers of cold cathode lighting.
